Only 36 hours to go

The crew has arrived, the marquees are up and the tents are being popped at a sunny John O’Groats. It’s only 36 hours now until another 700 riders will set off from the northernmost tip of the UK on an epic 982 mile journey South to Land’s End. Deloitte Ride Across Britain 2013 is nearly upon us.

Every Deloitte RAB is slightly different with new faces joining the Ride and giving each year a slightly different personality. What remains the same is the wide range of people attracted to taking on the ultimate UK cycling challenge.

This year we are excited to have a peloton that boasts 8 Olympic Medals, 8 Paralympic Medals, 150 England Rugby caps and even the record for cycling Land’s End to John O’Groats… and back (5 days and 21 hours if you must ask). However, RAB is a great leveler. Everyone from the fittest elite rider down tothe rider who just got into cycling a year ago is going to go through a range of experiences from elation when sweeping down the twisting descents of the Highlands, to despair when the wind and rain seems to batter relentlessly from every angle and the bum complains about the sheer lunacy of balancing on a wedge of carbon fibre and leather for 9 days in a row.

We will be updating the website throughout the event with live news, guest blogs from riders including Lewis Moody (Ex-England Rugby Captain and World Cup Winner), Ben Rockett (Land’s End to John O’Groats and back record holder), Kelly Sotherton (Athens Olympic Bronze medalist in the Heptathlon) and Heather Fell (Beijing Olympic Silver medalist in the Modern Pentathlon), and a range of photos, videos and behind the scenes insight into what makes this the ultimate UK cycling challenge.

In the meantime here are a few facts and figures to get an idea of what it is the brave riders will be undertaking:

The riders will burn around 6,000 calories a day, which is the same as 73 slices of bread, will climb over 1.5 times the height of Mt. Everest and will collectively get through 800kg of scrambled eggs, eat 20,000 bananas and drink 46,000 litres of water. And that’s not even mentioning the crew bar bill at the end!

We can’t wait to welcome every one here and in the meantime make sure you follow the Ride unfold live on the Live Event Page and chat to us on twitter @Deloitte RAB using #DeloitteRAB2013.
